WHY?
The European seminar dealt with the promotion of Human Rights values through audiovisual tools. This cross-cultural seminar gathered almost 30 participants from 14 European countries and the local audiences of Ankara. Besides encouraging intercultural dialogues, the meeting provided participants proper knowledge, tools and methods useful to develop films and audiovisual activities in their countries. In other words, the organizers tended to rise awareness among participants of the importance to make a broader use of audiovisual works to promote a Human Rights Culture in Europe.
WHAT?
Most of the activities dealt with the seminar main question: “How can cinema promote Human Rights values?” For example, each national group held lectures on a particular dimension of this question in regards with its own cinema and history. Discussions and workshops supplemented these presentations, on topics like:
-“Democratisation of Production and Distribution of Images”,
-“To look at Human Rights through Visor”,
-“Media & Monopolization"
Screenings of documentaries of Human Rights relevance also took place.
Some activities promoted innovating perspectives and points of view, like the workshop entitled “Images Left Out”. Parts of the program were open to public, notably the two ending lectures (“Human Rights in Turkish and European cinema” & “Alternative media production process”).
Experts and guests facilitated the activities like directors of videozine websites (Interspace, Bulgaria). Turkish academicians and directors were also invited.
OUTPUT
The seminar was followed up with the edition of a book, which collected the texts of all presentations, speeches and discussion held during this one-week seminar.
